Bursary Programme

Aim

The Department of Public Works bursary scheme aims to support the objectives and strategy of the Workplace Skills Plan based on the needs of the skills requirements of the department and also addressing the country’s skills shortage.
The bursary scheme is one of the mechanism that the department will be utilizing on their capacity building initiatives. This endeavor seeks to improve the Department of Public Works staff through offering internal bursaries and investing in prospective students by offering external bursaries.
The Department of Public Works acknowledges that, in order for it to grow, to meet its priorities and be more efficient it has to create an environment that will encourage their staff to develop their career and improving their skills. The department is also committed to the development of South African students to ensure that there is continuous supply of skilled personnel thorough out the department.

The Principle of Equity Guiding the Committee

The awarding of bursaries will be guided by the principle of equity, no applicant shall have greater or less access to a bursary on the grounds of any irrelevant factors such as race, gender, religion or political affiliation, while such factors such as academic ability, economic needs, national origin will be considered relevant if the objective is human skills development for the Department of Finance.

Labour Representative

Purpose

  • To advice the Department in bursary management
  • To make inputs in policy formulation
  • To make inputs in bursary focus to ensure alignment with the Departmental core competencies
  • To benchmark practices with successful bursary in other Government Department
  • To monitor at a strategic level, the implementation of the bursary management within the Department

Functions

  • Give budget inputs in the allocation of the internal bursary for the department of Public Works staff members and external bursaries to prospective students
  • To properly utilize the department bursary funds to enable staff members and students to gain access to higher education
  • To award external bursaries to deserving students aiming to study in fields that are relevant to the core business of the Department of Public Works
  • To award internal bursaries to department of public works staff aiming to develop their skills
  • To be involved in the approval of internal and external bursary applications on behalf of the Head Office and Regional Offices
  • To advice on possible strategies for marketing the bursary programme of the department of Public Works
