The outreach aimed to empower emerging and established contractors by providing critical information on compliance, CIDB grading, funding opportunities, and business development support. Under the theme “Build Your Business. Build South Africa,” the gathering served as a platform for contractors to engage with government and industry leaders, learn about available resources, and contribute to building a more inclusive and transformed construction sector.

Opening his remarks Deputy Minister Zikalala underscored the urgent need for disaster-resilient infrastructure and more responsive local systems. “Sustainability is not a luxury,” he said. “It is a necessity.” With South Africa currently chairing the G20 under the theme Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability, Zikalala spoke on the alignment between national goals and global priorities. He urged all stakeholders to intensify efforts around disaster risk reduction, localised infrastructure delivery, and the empowerment of previously disadvantaged communities.

Deputy Minister Zikalala expressed strong concern over the continued underrepresentation of black professionals and African women on the CIDB contractor register. “Transformation is not negotiable,” he declared. He pointed to the National Contractor Development Framework and the CIDB’s B.U.I.L.D Programme as critical tools to drive growth, equity, and access to opportunities.

Condemning construction-related crime, extortion, and intimidation, Zikalala called for a united stance to protect the sector and ensure uninterrupted delivery of vital infrastructure. He reaffirmed government’s commitment to an infrastructure-led economic recovery under the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan (ERRP). Marking Youth Month, the Deputy Minister invoked the spirit of the 1976 generation and the ideals of the Freedom Charter. “Today, through this outreach and programmes like these, we are reclaiming our future,” he said. “Let us build back better and ensure that no one is left behind.”
