DIRECTOR-GENERAL SIFISO MDAKANE’S TOUR TO INSPECT ROBBEN ISLAND MUSEUM

The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) as the custodian of immovable assets, is also responsible for infrastructure operations and maintenance of the Robben Island Museum. The Director-General of the department, Sifiso Mdakane, conducted a site visit to monitor the progress being made to revitalise, repair and perform upgrades to this historical site in Cape Town.

He was accompanied by a Project Manager from the Facilities Management Branch, Nishi Sharma, Robben Island Museum Acting CEO Ralph Links, senior officials from DPWI, and other stakeholders.

During the meeting, upgrades to the harbour’s facilities, electrical systems, waste management, removal and replacement of hazardous asbestos roofing were highlighted as key priorities to improve the tourists experience, and preserve heritage value.

Prior to the walkabout, DG Mdakane stated that there will be a visit of more than 50 state presidents that will come to the country for the G20 Summit. “it is essential to maintain and support the museum as a growing tourist attraction” he said.

Director General Mdakane expressed gratitude regarding the visit and also provided guidance on areas of improvement. “We saw the wonderful work done by the new contractor, the department’s role is to ensure that facilities and world heritage sites like Robben Island Museum are well maintained and prioritised,” said the DG.
