MINISTER MACPHERSON COMMEMORATES THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY OF GEORGE BUILDING COLLAPSE

Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, paid tribute to the victims and survivors of the George building collapse, that took place last year, 6 May 2024. The remembrance service that was held at the George Town Hall, marking the first anniversary of the tragedy, a moment of reflection for families of the deceased, and of the survivors. The tragedy unfolded when a five-story building that was still under construction collapsed, claiming the lives of 34 people and leaving many more injured. The collapse sparked national mourning, and serious concern about building safety standards across South Africa.

Speaking at the memorial gathering in George Town Hall, Minister Macpherson extended his condolences to the families of the deceased, and paid tribute to emergency personnel who rushed to the ground after the incident occurred. “We stand beside every family still grieving.,” said Macpherson. “And we recognise every survivor who carries the physical and emotional scars of that day” he added.

Minister Macpherson called for unity in the face of tragedy, pointing to the importance of collaboration that goes beyond politics. “This is not a moment for politics,” he said. “It’s a moment for all of us to work together to ensure justice is served for the victims and their families.”

In addition, the Minister announced that a full investigation, led by the Council for the Built Environment (CBE) and the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA), is already underway, with a final report expected by the end of May. “Those responsible must and will be held accountable,” Macpherson emphasised. “Transparency must guide our work, and that those who fail in their duties must face the consequences.”

The Department commits to use the findings of the investigation to strengthen oversight mechanisms, tighten regulatory compliance, and introduce preventative measures to avoid future tragedies of this nature. The Minister vowed to return to George to personally meet with the affected families and share the results of the investigation, ensuring transparency and justice.

The event was concluded with a moment of silence and a floral tribute. In the wake of heartbreak, the message from the Minister was clear; there must be accountability, and there must be justice. This statement underscores the commitment to ensuring that those responsible for the tragedy are held accountable, and that the victims and their families receive the justice they deserve.
