In a decisive move to promote meaningful opportunities for young people in the green economy, Deputy Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Sihle Zikalala, attended the 11th Annual Green Youth Indaba (GYI 2026) on 19 June 2026 at the Super Bowl, Sun City Resort, in the North West Province.

Hosted by the Green Youth Network in partnership with the North West Provincial Government, the event was held under the theme, “From Youth Innovation to Green Enterprise and Economic Impact.” The Indaba serves as a platform to create opportunities that empower young people to participate meaningfully in South Africa’s sustainable future. The Green Youth Indaba 2026 brought together thousands of young innovators, government leaders, industry experts, entrepreneurs, and researchers to explore opportunities in the green economy, sustainable development, and youth empowerment.
During his keynote address, Deputy Minister Zikalala highlighted the range of opportunities available within the green sector and encouraged young people to actively pursue funding and support for sustainable enterprises. “We wish to encourage you to look for funding opportunities for your sustainable enterprises from a number of sources, including UN agencies. The UNDP South Africa has invited applications for funding of up to US$40 000 for innovative community-led water, waste, and energy projects,” he said.

The Green Youth Indaba is South Africa’s leading youth sustainability platform, focusing on youth innovation, green career pathways, skills development, waste management, renewable energy, and enterprise development.
The event showcased a collective commitment to driving meaningful change, with collaboration, mentorship, and innovation highlighting the possibilities of a greener and more sustainable future. More than a conference, it served as a catalyst for action, celebrating the talent, passion, and resilience that continue to shape South Africa’s green economy.
In closing, Deputy Minister Zikalala shared a powerful reflection by entrepreneur Strive Masiyiwa that captured the spirit of the Indaba: “If you are working or running a business, you have to set aside time and money to invest in your continued formal education and skills acquisition. Whether you are a farmer, builder, or engineer, the opportunities are equal: just add a little innovation.”

The message served as a reminder to young people that their journey towards impact and leadership begins with personal accountability, continuous learning, and a willingness to act. The green economy is not only about reducing emissions; it is also about fostering inclusion, restoring dignity, and creating meaningful opportunities for millions of young people ready to contribute to a sustainable future. Through initiatives such as the Green Youth Indaba, young South Africans are being empowered to play a leading role in building a greener, more inclusive economy.
