DPWI DIRECTOR-GENERAL MONITORS IMPLEMENTING AGENTS OF THE DEPARTMENT

06 March 2026

As part of ensuring that the Departmental Recovery Plan is realised for implementation, the Director-General of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI), Mr Sifiso Mdakane, has started engaging with the department’s Implementing Agents (IAs) in order to closely monitor their performance on project delivery. Recently, Director-General Mdakane met with the Chief Executive Officer of COEGA, Mr Themba Koza, in Cape Town to discuss projects currently being implemented by the entity on behalf of DPWI.

The meeting focused on progress made on these projects, as well as challenges affecting delivery. It was noted that several projects are not moving as expected, which contributes to a growing backlog in infrastructure delivery. Infrastructure delays remain a challenge in the sector and have been attributed to factors such as contractor performance issues, administrative processes, and delayed payments.

There was consensus of the meeting that regular engagements between DPWI and COEGA are necessary to ensure better monitoring of projects and improved coordination. It was also agreed by both parties that delayed payments should be expedited to avoid unnecessary litigation and to ensure that infrastructure projects continue without further disruption.
