The Deputy Minister (DM) of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI) Sihle Zikalala, in his capacity as District Development Model (DDM) Champion for iLembe District, today joined Minister of Water and Sanitation Pemmy Majodina and Deputy Minister Isaac Sello Seitlholo, for a site inspection and stakeholder engagement on the uMshwathi Bulk Water Supply Scheme in KwaZulu-Natal.

The uMshwathi Bulk Water Supply Scheme is a strategic regional bulk infrastructure initiative implemented by the Department of Water and Sanitation in partnership with uMngeni-uThukela Water.
Co-funded through the Regional Bulk Infrastructure Programme and implementing partners, the project carries an estimated value of approximately R1.6 billion and aims to expand reliable access to potable water for communities in Ndwedwe and Maphumulo Local Municipalities.

Speaking during the visit, DM Zikalala emphasised the transformative intent of the project, noting that historically bulk water infrastructure often prioritised commercial agricultural users while surrounding communities remained underserved. “This project helps correct that imbalance,” he said.

The visit forms part of government’s commitment to coordinated service delivery and infrastructure development, ensuring that water security supports public health, dignity and inclusive economic growth across the district.
